Frequently asked questions
How do I allow or block AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot?
Add a per-user-agent group for each bot. To let an AI engine read your pages so it can cite you, use "Allow: /" for that user-agent (GPTBot for ChatGPT, ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Google-Extended for Google AI). To opt out, set "Disallow: /" for that same user-agent. This generator writes those groups for you.
Will blocking AI crawlers hurt my visibility in AI answers?
Yes. Answer engines can only cite pages they are allowed to fetch. If you block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot in robots.txt, your site becomes ineligible to appear in those engines’ answers. Block training crawlers only if you specifically want to opt out of model training, and keep search/answer crawlers allowed if you want citations.
What is the difference between training crawlers and answer crawlers?
Training crawlers (e.g. GPTBot, anthropic-ai, CCBot) collect data that may be used to train models. Answer/search crawlers (e.g. OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) fetch pages live to build cited answers. You can allow one and disallow the other by giving each user-agent its own rules.
Does robots.txt guarantee a page stays out of search?
No. Disallow only asks crawlers not to fetch a page; a blocked URL can still be indexed without content if other sites link to it. To reliably keep a page out of search, allow crawling and use a noindex meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header instead.
