Stop losing money on job sites in NY & NJ (the #1 contractor mistake)
Project Overview
StudSheet is an estimating, takeoff and job app for trade contractors, and a free project planner for homeowners, launched across the United States and Canada. It is IONIAN's own product: we designed, built and run it.
The Challenge
Contractors price jobs from memory, scraps of paper and spreadsheets. Materials get missed, estimates take evenings, and the paperwork that follows (change orders, invoices, crew hours) lives in five different apps. Homeowners, on the other side, have no honest way to know what a job involves before they ask for quotes.
Our Approach
We started from the math. Every calculator ("Sheet") is pure, tested TypeScript, with the research behind each number written down: framing layouts, coverage rates, cure times, regional rules such as frost depth and sales tax for each state and province. The app is built around that engine, so a takeoff, an estimate and a shopping list all come from the same counts.
The Solution
- Sheets: 44 projects, from framing and drywall to decks, concrete, roofing, tile and paint, each with a drawing, every material counted with the math shown, tools, the order of work and permit notes. Pro Sheets cover licensed trades such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
- Estimates that get signed: a price book and templates, tax presets per state and province, a client link where the client approves and signs, change orders, invoices and card payments straight to the contractor's own Stripe account.
- The job, end to end: a notebook per client with measurements, sketches and photos, a crew schedule with hours and crew logins, cut lists, van and shop stock, and an accountant export.
- Measure on the device: room scan with Apple RoomPlan on LiDAR devices, plan takeoff from PDFs and photos, and store receipts read straight into job cost.
- AI connector: a read-only MCP server so ChatGPT and Claude can answer with StudSheet's own Sheets.
One Expo codebase ships the web app, iOS and Android, on phones and tablets, with a Supabase backend that is optional: without an account, everything runs on the device.
Results
StudSheet runs live on the web with store builds for iOS and Android. Before launch, every route (about 145) was crawled in six data combinations, both themes and phone, laptop and iPad widths, with no page, console or hydration errors.
